Nest Wi-Fi ThermostatOver the past few years, a large number of homeowners have installed wirelessly controlled thermostats a.k.a. Wi-Fi thermostats to help control their energy costs. The convenience alone is a major appeal. With a wireless thermostat, you can control your home temperature on your iPhone right from the sofa, or even from work!

But, what you might be asking is whether or not these devices live up to the hype. Of course, they are a lot more attractive than traditional thermostats wherever you decide to install them. But, Wi-Fi thermostats are also a lot more expensive than normal programmable thermostats. So you may be wondering if Wi-Fi thermostats are worth the extra cost?

According to manufacturers, the answer is a resounding YES!

According to Ecobee, a leading manufacturer of Wi-Fi thermostats, their units saved homeowners an average of 23% in heating and cooling costs in 2013. Another manufacturer, Nest, says their Wi-Fi thermostats save homeowners an average of 10% to 12% on heating and 15% on cooling costs. Nest even have a savings calculator that will show you how much you could save by the end of the year depending on how you’ve set your thermostat.

Wi-Fi Thermostats vs. Traditional Programmable Thermostats

Compared to savings you’d get if you chose a traditional programmable thermostat, these Wi-Fi variants are clearly a cut above the rest.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Energy, homeowners save 10% on heating bills annually with a traditional programmable thermostat. But a 2004 study shows that some of the best programmable thermostats at that time only saved a meager 3.6% on heating costs annually. A similar study in 2006 that covered over 25,000 homes shows that traditional programmable thermostats only reduced heating and cooling costs by an average of 6.3%.

In other words, a Wi-Fi thermostat could save you 10% more than the best traditional programmable thermostat on the market.

How Wi-Fi Thermostats Control Home Energy Costs

How this happens is simple. When set up properly, a Wi-Fi thermostat will take complete control of your home heating and cooling, adjusting the temperature and climate in the home in a way that is both comfortable and cost effective. And you won’t have to worry about adjusting your thermostat to warm or cool your home when you’re away because these “smart thermostats” automatically turn themselves off when they detect you’re not at home. There will also be greater discipline in how the home is heated, cutting out unnecessary wastage that often drive up energy bills.
