Having an emergency generator can be a life saver in the case of an extended power outage.  Severe weather, earthquakes and man-made disasters can occur at any time and having the right emergency generator, and an ample supply of fuel can allow you to run small applicances, and heat and cool your home until your local utility provider can reestablish your service.

In part one two of our emergency generator series, we discussed how to select the right size unit for your particular needs.  In part two, we looked at the pros and cons of gasoline and diesel emergency generators.

In this installment, we’re going to take a look at propane as the fuel of choice.

Here are some of the key benefits of propane emergency generators:

  1. Propane can be stored for long periods of time (years).
  2. Propane generator availability is limited compared to gasoline powered units.
  3. Under emergency circumstances, availability and access to propane may be better than gasoline in different regions of the country.
  4. Propane is a very clean burning fuel.
  5. A large U.S. based supply of Propane fuel is available.
  6. For those who want to have a large reserve of personal fuel on hand for home use, storing 500 or 1000 pounds of Propane is preferable to hundreds of gallons of liquid fuel.

Here is a nice write up on the benefits of running propane as your fuel source.
