Whether your home has a gas or electric central heat, using space heaters to supplement the heating capacity of your main heating unit can not only save you money but also wear and tear on your furnace. This is especially true for large multi-room homes with few occupants.
Let’s say for example the desired room temperature is 72°. Using space heaters to maintain the temperature of 72° of rooms/areas where people are while the central unit of the house is allowed to drop to a temperature of 67° could very well result in hundreds of dollars of heating related cost savings per year. Because a good space heater is so inexpensive, the best way to find out is to just try one out and look to your utility bills to see if any savings have resulted.
In some cases you may find that while your utility bills have not gone down significantly you are however staying much more comfortable with the extra heat generated by space heaters without incurring any extra overall cost.
You can buy a nice space heater that would suffice in a bedroom, office or kitchen environment for around $40.
In some cases, however, you may find that replacing your existing HVAC system with a newer, more energy efficient heating and cooling system is more economical in the long run. Consult your local heating and A/C contractor to learn more about your options.
